INTRODUCTION

Leading from the Middle – the most difficult job of all!!
Equipping middle managers to not just work in the middle, but successfully lead from the middle, is all about balance. If your middle managers feel like they’re constantly being pulled in a million different directions, it’s because they are.

Middle managers must handle it all – connecting the overall organisational strategy to day-to-day tactical tasks – and effectively collaborating across functions to get work done. They are responsible for creating the conditions for direction to happen, and the challenge of directing from the middle is being able to meet the demands from above while providing resources to those below.

This interactive 5-day workshop provides middle managers with the opportunity to take stock of their approach to management and consider ways in which they may need to adjust their approach to take account of changing circumstances and increasing responsibilities. The programme emphasises the middle manager’s role in both influencing and implementing strategy and organisational change.

According to McKinsey, the increasing emphasis on agility in the business world is part of a major paradigm shift. The workshop will further demonstrate how the changing trends of the 21st-century workplace call for a shift to agile managers, front-runners, and employees. Invention and innovation, agility, and adaptability will be essential to the economic survival and are moving away from the old notion of organisations as machines with static, hierarchical structures, to a new view of companies as living organisms, composed of networks of people-centred groups that can learn and evolve quickly.

What makes middle management and leadership so unique, are the frequency and volume at which these managers may find themselves applying the full range of skills that they have in their toolkit. The only distinction between a manager and a leader is the scope of their influence.
